Emily Miller

My body of work reflects a multitude of influences around me such as pop culture, music, history, and my own experiences. I work mainly with illustration and design, and like to combine my interest in drawing with digital aesthetics and design based organization. I started working with design and illustration my sophomore year of college, when I took Principles of Design and got a chance to hone in on the type of design I enjoyed most as well as experiment with aspects of design I was not as familiar with. Along with illustration and design, I also enjoy other mediums like painting, drawing, and photography. Before I got into digital work, my paintings and drawings were mainly portraits and figure studies of people and animals, as I got introduced to design I became very fascinated with typefaces, logo design, and poster design.

My deep fascination with typography and poster design, and what inspired me to become a designer, started with an exhibition on display at the MFA in Boston about the Summer or Love of 1967. I have always had a love for classic music from that era and the aesthetics of the movement, and when I saw the amazing album artwork and posters, and the work of Wes Wilson (my favorite designer), I knew I wanted to learn how to emulate that style in my own work. My first design class with Professor Zahabi was more about a wide coverage of design elements, but as I got the chance to take more design classes I immediately started todo the kind of work I had been itching to get into. Professor Zahabi has done an amazing job in helping me to figure out my area of expertise and allow me to express my creative interests through my work. Along with discovering what areas of design suit me best, I’ve also been able to discover the areas I’m less successful with and don’t enjoy as much. I’m grateful to have had the chance to experiment with so many different aspects of design. Through my body of work my interests and inspirations are evident, as well as my love for whimsy, hand drawn type, and living physical forms.
