Jessica Gerakines

Jessica Gerakines will graduate from the University of New Hampshire in May 2021 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Jessica has spent most of her life in a small town called Pelham, New Hampshire, where she grew up. She always had taken interest in painting and photography from the time that her parents handed her a paint brush and a fisher price camera at the age of three. During her four years at UNH, Jessica has been able to develop a greater focus within these two forms of media, exploring deeper methods to self-reflection and spatial expression. She has been able to display her artwork at the New Hampshire Art Association gallery in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and was granted the opportunity to work as a photography fellowship student in the UNH Art Department for two years.

Jess attains inspiration from personal memory and often connects her work to her experiences in the natural world. Driving her motivation is her dear friends who she greatly looks up to and holds close to her heart.

Artist’s Statement

Intuition is a condition and a tool that can be utilized for creating. My work often deals with this notion as I take rough ideas and put them into action. I let my subconscious take control of my brush, and I am never truly certain what the work will appear as, what colors will be included, or when the work will be completed. These are all feelings that come within. However this kind of work has been tricky. When there is too much attention centered on feelings of intuition, the conscious mind begins to take over, and the intuition is lost. Within the context of my oil paintings, much of my intuited energy is centered on mark making and color relationships upon the canvas. I regularly ask myself how the pigments speak to each other and what tensions do they hold. Within my mark making, I find that it reveals itself in active, energetic movement that more often than not appears fleeting and open. While I may not always understand where this energy comes from, it is something that I continue to explore in my study.
