Sophie Rancourt

I love to paint because it excites me to bring out the vibrancy of everyday life. I began my time in the UNH Art Department halfway through college, when I had recently come out of a dark place in my life, and found my love for art again. I began seeing the world around me in a completely different way. In my work, I have learned to see things from a different perspective; the relationship between shapes, and the color world that exists within in each shape. I like to create a strong sense of structure and color when creating my work, and one technique that I use is to look at my subject in more of a geometric sense.

The inspiration for my work is the world around me. I enjoy painting the people, plants and life that exists within nature, and then give it a graphic context. When painting people, I represent the diversity within each person, and use a range of colors to evoke mood and emotion. I have always believed that the best thing about art is that the creators of it get to let everyone else see things from their point of view. I like to think that when people look at my art, they will see color and shape in a new way, and be inspired to challenge the way they see everyday life.
